Investigating drones with Oxygen Forensic Detective

In addition to mobile phones, computers and cars, drones are also a source of information for your digital forensics investigation. Drones contain flight data that includes GPS data, photos and videos, but also, for example, the set location to which a drone should fly in case of signal loss. Oxygen Forensic Detective, now mostly used by investigators for reading out mobile phones and hard drives, can also be used for securing flight data from drones.

Use case - JDEAL
JDEAL is an internationally assembled team of specialists at the Ministry of Defence who, when deployed, can fly in a complete mobile lab. They can then conduct on-site investigation in a variety of areas. This allows them to examine explosives and find out the composition of the material, as well as secure DNA traces and digital data carriers.

This way, JDEAL builds on the successes of the Multinational Theatre Exploitation Laboratory (MNTEL) in Kabul. Technical investigation there proved crucial to tracking down bombers and understanding the network behind them. Phones used as detonators for IEDs often contain a wealth of information, such as most called numbers, photos, videos, etc. Fingerprints found on (pieces of) roadside bombs are of course invaluable as well. All these pieces of information ultimately lead to more insights about the enemy and their modus operandi.

JDEAL not only concentrates on IEDs but is also used in the detection of criminal networks. The lab is only one link in the entire intelligence chain, but it can provide crucial information to intelligence agencies through technical investigations.

Below is an example of such a lab where data carriers such as computers and mobile phones can be extracted. Parts of data carriers can also be identified here.

JDEAL is also getting more and more involved with drones. For example, an attack may have been carried out by means of a drone. By reading the drone data, the JDEAL team can identify possible perpetrators. Among other things, they can gain insight into the take-off position, photos or videos taken during the flight, and the GPS data present in the metadata.

Specialised training
DataExpert recently provided Digital Forensics training for the JDEAL team. During this training, members of the team were trained in forensically securing data. This included reading out Ministry of Defence drones, for which Oxygen Forensic Detective was used. Below are two photos taken during the training.

Oxygen Forensic Detective
Oxygen Forensics Detective is specialised forensic software for reading digital devices (such as phones and tablets) both in the cloud and from the device itself. Oxygen supports a large number of devices based on iOS and Android.
