NIST approves Falcon-NEO

The Forensic Falcon has become a staple of the digital forensics world. This is the ultimate solution when it comes to copying large amounts of data quickly. Recently, the device was also officially certified by the leading institute NIST.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST for short, sets standards for technology and products that improve economic security and quality of life. The goal: to inform investigators about the accuracy of the investigation results obtained with a tool.

The NIST is considered the gold standard when it comes to innovation. The institute is supported in setting testing standards by major U.S. government agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Institute of Justice and the Department of Defence Cyber Crime Center.

The test results
According to the NIST Computer Forensics Tool Testing Program Logicube's Falcon-NEO meets expectations for the various investigation scenarios* tested. For instance, the Falcon-NEO provides a log file in PDF, HTML or XML once a task is completed. The log file contains detailed information about the process, such as:

  • serial number of the device
  • software version
  • duration of a specific task
  • hash values for source or copy
  • file system information for source and destination
  • model information for source and destination

In addition, it is possible for investigators to enter case information, such as the investigator's name, case number, evidence number, and so on. Furthermore, the Falcon-NEO can create images of a physical disk and a logical partition, clone a source to a destination, and hash a source disk.
