Quickly read out phones at a crime scene with XRY

Investigators at a crime scene are often under great pressure to gain quick insight into a particular situation. Phones of bystanders or family members can sometimes help in the search for evidence. A quickly deployable, easy-to-use tool that allows you to selectively search phone data is desirable for this, while taking into account the privacy of those involved.

MSAB has developed a new selective extraction method especially for this purpose, which can very specifically collect the desired data from a mobile phone. This new method is part of the standard XRY software and ensures filtering of desired time, dates and apps even before the phone is fully extracted.

“I was amazed when I learned about XRY from MSAB and its capabilities for enabling law enforcement agencies to confidently selectively target their extractions to only recover data from specified apps to ensure the rights to privacy for ‘victims’ and ‘witnesses’ phones”, says an employee of the United States Country Sheriff's Office facing a complex case involving suspected child sexual abuse. A case study described how XRY helped the Police with the selective search for Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).

XRY
An important fact for MSAB, of course, is the continuous support for the latest phones and operating systems coming to market. In October, the new release XRY 10.3 came out with support for more than 42,860 devices and more than 4,247 app versions. XRY 10.3 also offers support for IOS 16 and Android 13 devices, among others. In addition, MSAB has launched a new MTK exploit. “This is the beginning of an exhaustive list of phones for which we provide support for physical data extraction from locked MTK-based phones", says Joel Bollӧ, CEO of MSAB.

XAMN
MSAB has also spent a lot of time in recent years improving and optimising their XAMN software. These improvements were focused on ease of use, powerful search functionality and efficiency. Examples of these further developments include the ability to use 'Person Identification' to automatically detect and match potential individuals with the same identity and the 'Connection view' to automatically link individuals who have been in contact with each other.

Many improvements have also been made in the latest version of XAMN, version 7.3, including faster filtering by prioritising desired filters via drag and drop, new detailed audit logging and easy compilation of custom reports via drag and drop.
