I am a victim of crypto fraud
Do you think you have been scammed with cryptocurrency? Or are you unable to withdraw your crypto from a platform?
Victims often only realize at a later stage that fraud has occurred. It usually starts with doubt: a withdrawal fails, you are asked to make an additional payment, or you continue to be contacted by someone claiming to help.
These types of situations are becoming increasingly common. Crypto fraud is often professionally set up and can be difficult to detect. Complex concepts such as wallets, blockchains, transactions, and different crypto networks make it even harder to understand what exactly has happened.
An important first step is to stop making further payments and gain clarity about the situation.
I have been scammed with crypto. What should I do?
If you suspect that you are a victim of crypto fraud, it is advisable to report this to the police. This is the criminal law route, aimed at identifying and prosecuting perpetrators. In addition, banks, fraud helpdesks, or other authorities can advise you on possible next steps.
In some cases, it may also be useful to investigate where your crypto has been transferred. Transactions on the blockchain often leave digital traces. By analyzing these, insight can be gained into financial flows, involved wallets, and possible platforms where the crypto has ended up.
Take concrete steps
Many victims wait too long, due to shame or uncertainty. This is understandable, but time is an important factor.
We recommend the following steps:
1. Stop making payments or investments immediately
2. Report the fraud to the police
3. Preserve all communication, transactions, and wallet addresses
4. Do not attempt “self-recovery” through unknown parties
What does DataExpert do?
We conduct blockchain investigations into crypto transactions. Using specialized analysis tools, we investigate where cryptocurrencies have been transferred and whether there are leads for further action.
In simple terms:
• we examine where the funds have been transferred
• whether patterns, wallets, or platforms can be identified
• and whether there are realistic next steps
The results are documented in a tracing report that can be used by lawyers in civil proceedings, for example when attempting to freeze assets.
If the investigation shows that further steps may be possible, we can connect you with lawyers who have experience in crypto fraud cases, such as Hupkes Advocaten in the Netherlands and Tuerlinckx Tax Lawyers in Belgium.
They can assess which legal steps are possible in your situation, for example to freeze assets or initiate proceedings to recover funds.
In this way, the process does not stop at understanding what has happened, but we also look together at which follow-up steps may still be possible to recover your funds.
What is the Quick Scan?
We understand that you want to know which next steps are possible in your situation, and whether an investigation is worthwhile at all.
That is why we offer a Quick Scan. During this initial analysis, our investigators review the available data within 1 to 2 hours, such as wallet addresses, transactions, and platforms used. Based on this, we assess whether a more extensive tracing investigation is possible and meaningful.
The results of the Quick Scan may also be valuable for a police investigation. New investigative leads may emerge. You are free to share this information with the police, for example through a supplementary report.
In some cases, the Quick Scan leads to a more extensive investigation. In other cases, it is important to know that further steps are unlikely to be successful.
What should you not expect from us?
It is important to emphasize that we cannot guarantee the recovery of crypto. If an investigation shows that further steps are not worthwhile, we will say so honestly. This helps prevent unnecessary costs or further disappointment.
