The hidden world behind OnlyFans

Behind the success of platforms like OnlyFans lies a world that most people never see.

Last night, BBC One and BBC Three aired a new investigative documentary exploring the risks of exploitation within the digital ecosystem that has emerged around OnlyFans.

For this international production, our colleagues Chris de Meijer and Michelle Rasch contributed their expertise in data analysis and digital investigations.

Chris and Michelle have conducted research into the evolution of sexual exploitation across digital platforms such as OnlyFans, Fansly, and Fanzen. Their work provided valuable insight into the networks, methods, and online communities where so-called “OnlyFans Managers” share knowledge on recruiting, managing, and exerting pressure on content creators.

The documentary highlights how complex digital ecosystems can develop around online platforms and why understanding these networks is critical to identifying and combating exploitation.

For organizations tasked with combating crime and fraud, visibility into digital networks is crucial. Data analytics, OSINT, and digital investigations help turn complex online activity into actionable insights.

At DataExpert, we have been supporting organizations in the fight against crime, fraud, and cybercrime for more than 35 years by combining technology, data and expertise. We are proud that the expertise of our colleagues has contributed to this important international investigative project.

Special thanks to presenter Amber Haque, producer Amelia Ellis, and BAFTA- and Grierson Award-winning producer and director Natasha Cox for bringing this important story to a wider audience.
